What's Happening?  Oregon's Opioid Crisis

                                        Sponsored by

According to the Pew Research Center, 46 percent of Americans have a family member or close friend who is addicted to drugs or has been in the past. Opioids now account for more than 6 in 10 overdose deaths.

Knowing no boundaries, opioid addiction cross all socioeconomic lines from small towns to big cities in the United States. More than 2 million Americans are dependent on or abuse prescription pain pills and street drugs, namely heroin, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ninety-one Americans die every day from opioid overdose. Declared a national crisis, the CDC estimates the economic burden of just prescription opioid misuse in the U.S. is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment and criminal justice involvement.

Oregon has one of the highest rates of prescription opioid misuse in the nation, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

An average of three Oregonians die every week from prescription opioid overdose.
