FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Maps Credit Union Receives Excellence Award for Outstanding HR/Training & Development Achievements

May 16, 2013 – Salem, OR — Maps Credit Union was recently honored with an Excellence Award, which recognizes outstanding human resource/training and development achievements in the credit union industry.

The award was presented by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) HR/TD Council, a national network comprised of 750 credit union human resource and training & development professionals. Awards are given in each of three categories, including Employee Engagement, HR/TD Management Practices and HR/TD Strategic Leadership.

Maps won the Practices category for its entry, entitled To the Olympics and Beyond, one of many planned initiatives seeking to engage employees in wellness activities, promote work-life balance and provide practical information about how to stay healthy on the job and at home.

“Employee wellness is such an important part of performance, engagement, and on-the-job happiness,” says Maps’ HR Director Barbara Cecil. “To help our employees be their best, we created incentives and activities that are fun and that promote wellness in all areas. Not just physical fitness, but also healthy eating, stress- reduction, and building deep relationships at work.” To support the initiative, Cecil continues, the credit union earmarked $30,000 in budget funds to cover employee incentives and activities.

“The HR/TD Council Excellence Award recognizes and honors credit unions that exemplify excellence in HR and training & development in the credit union industry,” says Jennifer Huggard, Chair of the Awards Committee for the CUNA HR/TD Council. “Credit unions that receive these awards should be extremely proud of their accomplishments and know that their work represents outstanding examples of Employee Engagement, Management Practices and Strategic Leadership. The CUNA HR/TD Council is proud to celebrate those who are deserving of this recognition.”

Award winners were recognized at the council’s 19th annual conference held April 21–24 in Anaheim, Calif. For more information on the HR/TD Excellence Awards or to view the entire list of winners, go to http://www.cunahrtdcouncil.org/awards/2013excellencewinners.html.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 13, 2013 (Salem, OR) — Two new Enterprise Zones (EZ) in Marion County have been approved by Business Oregon – the North Marion Enterprise Zone and the Silverton Enterprise Zone. Oregon’s Enterprise Zones offer a unique resource for businesses expanding or relocating, with an exemption from local property taxes on new investments and as a focal point for local development efforts. Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments, Business Oregon and SEDCOR assisted in expediting the process.

“These new Enterprise Zones offer a great opportunity for local businesses and communities to grow jobs and wealth in their communities. This has been a great example of these communities working together to support economic development,” said Chad Freeman, SEDCOR president.

The North Marion Enterprise Zone is a collaborative effort among the cities of Donald, Hubbard and Aurora to encourage economic development. Dave Hetrick, City of Donald council president, said two businesses have expressed interest in participating and their investment would mean a lot to their city. Matt Kennedy, Hubbard City Council member said Hubbard’s industrial park is well suited for business startups and business expansion and the Enterprise Zone will be very beneficial to all three cities.

The Silverton Enterprise Zone has a total area of 112.3 acres and encompasses an area northwest of downtown Silverton off Highway 214.

Patti Milne, Marion County Commissioner stated, “These enterprise zones will bring much needed and welcome economic opportunity and growth. We have strong businesses that will benefit from expansion opportunities and the potential to bring new businesses and new jobs is critical for these small communities. Many thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this happen.”

Traded-sector businesses can receive total exemption from the property taxes normally assessed on new plant and equipment for three to five years. Eligible business includes manufacturers, processors, shippers and a variety of operations that serve other organizations, as well as call centers and headquarter-type facilities.

Before construction or installation activities begin, companies need to contact SEDCOR or their Enterprise Zone Manager to receive an application for authorization. SEDCOR can help you determine if you are eligible for the incentives and provide assistance throughout the process. SEDCOR is here to help you take advantage of the program’s financial incentives that are helping drive capital improvements, business expansion and employment.

###

SEDCOR is a private, non-profit membership organization, composed of over 500 business and community leaders. SEDCOR’s mission is to enhance and diversify the economy of the Mid-Willamette Valley by supporting the performance of existing businesses and recruiting new businesses.

Due to a recent phenomenon in China called “operation green fence” many shipments of plastics from the U.S. and other countries that do not meet pre‐shipment specifications, or have excessive levels of contamination, are being rejected.

This has had a huge negative impact on the plastic recycling industry, particularly for miscellaneous types of plastic and plastic containers numbers 3‐7.

Evidently, many of the plastic bales that China has been receiving have contained high levels of contamination or just low grade plastics like toys, baby bottles, yogurt containers, etc.

Since February, Chinese customs officials have started to reject loads that contain these types of plastics so recyclers throughout Oregon and beyond are forced to curtail what they can accept. This drop in demand has also had the effect of lowering the value of what recyclers get paid for the plastics and have forced Agri‐Plas, a Marion County plastics recycler, to lay off many of their employees.

In the same vein, many of the businesses that Agri‐Plas previously picked up from are facing the same situation and will need to temporarily throw away plastics that they have been recycling. While this is an unfortunate development , at least the low‐grade plastics are generating electricity at a clean‐burning waste‐to‐energy facility rather than being separated out in China for landfilling or polluting forms of incineration.

Some other silver linings to this phenomenon may be cleaner processing of plastics for recycling (good for the whole planet), incentives to build stronger plastics recycling infrastructure here in the U.S. (good for the economy), and an opportunity to educate on the benefits of avoiding packaging whenever possible since we can’t always count on recycling to make our unwanted stuff “go away.”

So, which plastics can you recycle? For the time being, you can still continue to place the rigid plastics you’ve been collecting for years in your recycling roll cart or container. However, some of our super‐recyclers have been collecting “non‐commingleable” plastics for recycling that can not go into their bins. For those folks, here are what Agri‐Plas will accept:

Nursery pots, trays and crates

Pesticide/herbicide drums and jugs ‐ triple‐rinsed, lids off

Drums

Totes

Clean clear film ‐ basically shrinkwrap

Operation Green Fence affects Oregon recycling

Many EarthWISE businesses may face temporary increase in garbage collection

PET strapping and PP strapping ‐ must be separated from film

Clean buckets

Baling twine

As you can see, they are no longer accepting miscellaneous household plastic, nursery drip tape, seedsacks, supersacks, pet food sacks, nursery pot tags, colored film bags. Greenhouse films will need to be reviewed on a case‐by‐case basis. Call them before you bring it in at 503-390‐2381.

PVC

Marion County’s Brown’s Island Demolition Landfill is still accepting PVC plastics for free disposal on all days of operation, but the dropped off material will no longer be sorted for recycling. PVC can include pipe, lawn furniture, and some bottles (look for a number 3) and plastic flexible toys.

Most PVC is not easily recyclable, and the types that are (mainly pipe) are overstocked at processing facilities. Collecting other rigid plastic in usable condition has also proved a challenge. Because of the chemical additives that PVC contains, the best disposal option is to divert it from the Waste‐to‐Energy Facility by bringing it to the Brown’s Island Landfill.

GROW comes to Silverton to remind, renew, revive

SILVERTON, ORE. 2 MAY 2013 — In celebration of GROW North Santiam’s four-year anniversary and 284 clients, GROW is going “on the road” to Silverton for the first time in the organization’s history. GROW will be offering its new, free signature workshop called “Make More Money Doing What You Love: Practicing the Art of Business Success” to people in the communities of Silverton and Mt. Angel. The two-day workshop is co-sponsored by GROW EDC, Silver Falls Library, Silverton Chamber of Commerce and the Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce and will be held on Tuesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 13 at the Silver Falls Library from 6 to 8 p.m.

In this workshop, GROW Executive Director Allison McKenzie teaches business owners, churches, non-profits, cities and others how to set up their organizations to increase profitability and maximize success. These classes are given in a fun, lively and supportive atmosphere and are meant to reinvigorate commitment to business success, teach a new method of engaging with your organization, and learn new material that can help improve the bottom line and reduce stress.

“Make More Money Doing What You Love” is an opportunity for people to test drive the well-known process that GROW uses with clients in the North Santiam Canyon and valley. Over the past four years, GROW has witnessed that the secret to setting up a successful operation relies on the same principles whether it’s a church, a community, a business, a nonprofit or a special project.

This workshop is made possible in part by additional supplemental funding from Marion County and is a pilot project for GROW to test the waters outside its traditional borders. “We are really pleased to bring this free workshop to Silverton and Mt. Angel and share the process that has been used so effectively with business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs in the other rural communities we serve,” says McKenzie.

“This is a chance to renew your vision for your business, and to re-tool or reinvent yourself,” says McKenzie. “Although the economic situation in recent years has been troubling to many, it has also created an opportunity for businesses and organizations to reinvent themselves, re-think their mission, become more nimble, and add new life to their enterprise.”

Silverton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Stacy Palmer says, “We are very excited to help bring this valuable training here to Silverton and bring this education to small business owners.”

Refreshments will be provided. For questions regarding the two-part workshop, contact Allison McKenzie at 503.871.5188 or allison@growsantiam.org.
