32nd Annual Vernon L. Wiscarson Young Musicians’ Competition

Featuring Ten Area Students . . .

SALEM-On Saturday, March 3 ten of the area’s top young musicians will take to the stage to vie for some of the top prize money in the state at the 32nd Annual Vernon L. Wiscarson Young Musicians’ Competition. This competition encourages serious young musicians to hone their performance skills by participating in a juried competition and is part of the educational program of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem. It was established by Edna Wiscarson and daughter Sandra in memory of their husband and father. Mr. Wiscarson was a long time Salem music educator and owned music stores in Portland and Salem as well as being an accomplished oboeist. Over the years, this event has provided an opportunity for many student musicians to showcase their talent with many of them going on to perform with the Oregon Symphony as a featured artist as part of the organizations Youth Concerts.

One former competitor, Nelly Kovalev, a violinist who won the competition in 1999 has recently been seen on stage as part of the orchestra substituting for another musician who is out on a sabbatical. Nelly graduated from South Salem High School and went on to study music at Portland State University . She is now a member of the Portland Opera Orchestra , Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestra and the Eugene Symphony in addition to her recent work with the Oregon Symphony.

This year’s competition will feature ten musicians from the Salem and Corvallis areas with six of them returning from last year. “This speaks highly to the level of professionalism with which this event is run and the reputation it has among area music teachers and students,” said Chuck Peter, chair of the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem’s Education Committee.

The event will take place on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 10am in Smith Music Hall on the campus of Western Oregon University and will feature the following young musicians in order of appearance:
