Like the rest of Oregon, the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) experienced sharp employment losses late in 2008 and through all of 2009, in particular in the private sector. Salem continued to shed private-sector jobs during 2010 and the first half of 2011. Salem's private-sector employment "bottomed out" in the summer of 2011.

Salem's private sector began showing slow employment growth in the second half of 2011 and through 2012. Employment growth in the area picked up its pace in 2013 and has continued so far in 2014. From October 2013 to October 2014, Salem's private sector added 5,400 jobs, growing 5 percent.

With 5 percent growth, Salem tied the Bend-Redmond MSA as the Oregon metro area with the fastest private-sector growth over the past 12 months.
