Independence touted for gigabit-speed network

The City of Independence is garnering national attention for a gigabit-speed municipal broadband network that it built with neighboring Monmouth eight years ago. The a town of about 8,500 residents sent delegates to the Gigabit City Summit in Kansas City last week.

 

A story in the Portland Business Journal newspaper reported that Shawn Irvine, Independence's Economic Development Director is leveraging the network with other resources to enhance the community and bring new ideas and businesses.

 

"Inclusion, access, education, and economic development were the main themes," the paper reported. "Independence is developing a strategy, called Digital Independence, to tackle all four. In particular, Independence is working with some major tech companies in the state to develop a 'smart agriculture lab' leveraging sensor networks and big data applications. Students from schools in Independence will help build and deploy sensor networks for this Lab."
