Salem Names Steve Powers as New Chief Executive

The Salem City Council voted unanimously to appoint Steve Powers as City Manager. Mr. Powers’ contract will go into effect November 30, 2015.

 

Mr. Powers is the outgoing City Administrator for Ann Arbor, Michigan, a leadership position he has held since September 15, 2011. Salem Mayor Anna Peterson, City Councilor Andersen and Council President Nanke, recently completed a visit to Ann Arbor where they met with a number of community members, leaders and stakeholders regarding Powers’ leadership.

"We are so pleased and proud to appoint Steve Powers as our next chief executive,” said Mayor Peterson. “Mr. Powers is a highly professional City Manager with a truly impressive background whose accomplishments include a proven track record in community and economic development, fiscal management and intergovernmental relations.”

 

“Based on our thorough recruitment process, including the recent visit to Ann Arbor, we feel confident that we are bringing in a very solid, highly qualified professional to lead the charge for the City of Salem,” said Council President Nanke.

 

Powers said “I am thrilled to be joining the Salem team and am humbled by the support from Mayor Peterson and the City Council. My wife and I are anxious to move west and get settled in Salem.”

 

Steve Powers holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration and Political Science from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and a Master in Public Administration from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. He has extensive governmental experience including four years as the City Administrator with Ann Arbor, Michigan, fifteen years as County Administrator with Marquette, Michigan, two years as County Coordinator with Martin County, Minnesota and seven years as Assistant County Administrator/Assistant to County Administrator with Jackson County, Oregon.
