SEDCOR Construction Alliance

The SEDCOR Construction Alliance (SCA) kicked off a new year with a new President, Joe Bakke of Turner Construction Company and a renewed or reaffirmed agenda and focus. Education continues to be one of the primary focuses, successfully completing a ten-week construction curriculum for the youth at Dallas High School in the 2011 school year. The SCA has their sights on Santiam, Silver Falls and Mt. Angel school districts this year to name a few, including an opportunity at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility to set up an educational program as a continuation of the construction technology classes already held at Maclaren.

With the ever growing popularity of the SCA group, partnerships and collaboration opportunities have begun to blossom. Recently the Home Builders Association, the Salem Contractors Exchange and Habitat for Humanity have joined the group to begin partnering with the SCA to make larger impacts to our local area. Stay tuned! This group is gaining ‘traction’ and is making a positive mark in the local area.

ECOB Launches Expansion of a Mega Coating Facility in Salem, Oregon

Eco Building™ Products, Inc., announced today the company has signed a five-year lease to set up a mega coating facility in Salem, Oregon USA. This facility strategically located in the heart of the timber producing corridor is approximately 30,000 square feet located on a railway spur. The company plans to occupy a portion of the facility to start by deploying two coating lines with the provisions to expand up to 8 coating lines.

Salem, Oregon is a very strategic location allowing ECOB the ability to purchase timber products from various lumber mills in the local corridor from Northern Washington State to Southern Oregon. ECOB plans to produce full unit quantities of protected lumber products for shipment destined to all our wholesale lumber positions in various markets across the USA. The Salem location will allow the company the ability to strategically manage supply chain minimizing the impact of freight costs. The company plans to have the facility producing production products by the end of November 2011.

“After a lot of due diligence we found an ideal location and relationship to allow ECOB the ability to continue execution of our original plan, getting protected lumber to all markets at a cost effective price making it harder and harder for anyone to consider using unprotected lumber. We will have the ability to purchase direct from the largest lumber mills in the world that are growing trees in our backyard, apply our coatings and supply our entire USA infrastructure without adding freight costs. This facility provides ECOB with rail car access and plenty of room for expansion,” stated Steve Conboy, President and CEO of Eco Building Products

“This is a significant move towards total supply chain management reducing the overall impact of coating costs,” added Steve Conboy.

Marion County Reentry Initiative News - January 2012
Renaming Dedication & Celebration - February 3, 2012

The Pine Street Resource Center opened on January 31, 2011 – just seven short months after the idea of a new one-stop shop was envisioned for Marion County reentry clients. The resource center is the collective vision of Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul DeMuniz, businessman Larry Tokarski, and Marion County Commissioner Janet Carlson.

“Thanks to the wisdom and commitment of these leaders, hundreds of men and women are getting the help they need to succeed,” states Mike Mayes, the Community Action manager who oversees the Center and a separate 12-bed transitional housing program for former inmates.

The Center improves access to existing resources and provides direct services to ex-offenders. This includes access to legal, medical, educational and employment assistance. Additional services include housing, transportation, family assistance, support groups, and basic needs.

The Center includes both large and small class/ conference rooms, four computers for client job search and resume writing, and office space that partner agencies use when meeting with clients. Center staff help clients determine their needs and develop a preliminary action plan. Staff from the Center and other community agencies are available to assist with case management, problem solving and connecting to resources.

Save Now: Low-Cost Ways to Reduce Energy Use

These “wattsmart” energy-saving tips are low and no-cost ways to help your business lower energy use and boost your bottom line:

  • Minimize artificial lighting – Turn off lights in unoccupied areas. Use occupancy sensors or label light switches so employees know which lights to turn off.
  • Power down electronic equipment – A single computer and monitor left on overnight and on weekends can add $30 or more to your annual energy bill. Some equipment, including printers and copiers, should have their power management features enabled or be turned off when not in use.
  • Control heating and air conditioning – Reducing heating temperatures or increasing cooling temperatures by one or two degrees can cut heating and cooling bills by 8 percent or more, according to the U. S. Department of Energy.
  • Measure and record energy use – Walk around your facility to identify inefficient equipment and processes, then develop an action plan for reducing energy consumption. Once your plan is in place, measure and record your energy use to determine if your energy-saving efforts are working.
  • Get employees involved – You may want to appoint an employee as an energy champion to gather information on improving efficiency and to ensure that equipment is properly maintained.

Pacific Power’s Business Solutions Toolkit (pacificpower.net/toolkit) offers customized information to help you make sound energy decisions. For details on energy efficiency programs and incentives, please visit pacificpower.net/wattsmart.
