Oregon DOE releases 2011 BETC Information

The Oregon Department of Energy has released information about the 2011 application process for the controversial Business Energy Tax Credit system, which was overhauledThe Oregon Department of Energy has released information about the 2011 application process for the controversial Business Energy Tax Credit system, which was overhauled earlier this year by the Oregon Legislature.

Applications for the next round of “Tier 1″credits for this category, there is $15 million in tax credits available for projects with an estimated cost of less than $500,000 —will open on Jan 3.

A first tranche of $5 million in Tier 1 credits will be awarded between Jan. 3 and Feb. 11. The second chunk of $5 million in credits will be awarded between Feb. 18 and April 1. The third and final $5 million will be designated between April 11 and May19.

For “Tier 2″ projects, priced between $500,000 and $6 million, $10 million in BETC tax credits will be awarded between March 7 and April 8.

Projects costing $6 million or more will compete for $10 million of available “Tier 3″ BETC credits between Jan. 24 and Feb. 28.

The $35 million in BETC credits represent the end of the program in the state, unless it is somehow revived in the upcoming Oregon Legislative session. The BETC’s have been criticized for being too generous, but advocates from the renewable energy sector point to its job-creation achievements and are banding together to find a way to save or replace the program.

The BETC application process is slightly different this time — no hand-delivered applications will be accepted and must be postmarked within the application round’s official dates.

Official BETC rules area available via the Oregon DOE website click here.
