WINDPOWER 2011

American Wind Energy Association

Ray Burstedt, SEDCOR

I recently attended the American Wind Energy Association show in Anaheim, California along with other members of TEAM OREGON, a coalition of Business Oregon and multiple local/regional economic development organizations in the state. The group markets Oregon’s advantages as a location for renewable energy manufacturing. The conference focused on everything from major manufacturers of towers and turbines to every conceivable supply chain industry associated with wind power generation.

Before the conference I visited with prior clients from Fontana and Riverside, CA and I can report that the economic conditions in that area are much worse than they were last year when I visited. One company that was one of our targeted recruits had 134 employees when we first contacted them. They now have just 12 employees and are in an extremely cautious holding pattern. One of my other contact companies has also experienced a downturn in their industry and thoughts of relocation are a long way off. We continue to keep in contact with many companies in the Southern California area because once the economy does fully recover, we want to be positioned to react to their needs should relocation become an option for them.

The following day I met with clients at the American Wind Energy Association show. I had made previous contact with four companies who had indicated interest in Oregon and our ability to provide them a cost benefit for relocating here. With that said, they each expressed great concern over the fact that our wind farms are being asked to shut down their production due to the extreme water flows that our hydro facilities are experiencing. All four companies indicated that they would not be interested in an Oregon operation at the current time. The companies represented Korea, China and Belgium and though their interest in our area is no longer strong, we will continue to monitor their needs. Oregon had 14 people working the show and a number of Oregon manufacturers had a presence in the Oregon booth.

Solarize Salem Launches Second Solar Energy Co-op Program

Solarize Salem, a Salem-area solar energy co-op, launches their second program to install 50 photovoltaic systems in the Salem area on Wednesday, June 1, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. on the State Capitol steps in Salem.

“Based on the success of last year’s program, a new leasing option and the changing tax credit laws,” said Ross Swartzendruber, Solarize Salem coordinator, “we expect the goal of 50 installations to be reached quickly.”

The initial program, held August – October 2010, received interest from more than 400 homeowners, 52 of which entered the program and installed 165 kW of capacity on rooftops throughout the Salem area. Upon reaching 100 kW, RS Energy agreed to donate a 3.2 kW system at Adam Stephens Middle School. The installation is scheduled for September, 2011. When the goal of 50 installations is reached this year, RS Energy has agreed to donate a system to South Salem High School.

An Oregon-made system, priced at $5.50 per watt and a lease package will be offered by RS Energy, a contractor from the 2010 program. The Oregon system will feature SolarWorld modules, made in Hillsboro, PV Powered inverters, made in Bend and Sun Storage racking, from La Grande. To qualify for the program pricing, homeowners must have a suitable home and attend a solar workshop. The program is a special project of Salem Creative Network, a nonprofit corporation organized to provide creative solutions for social innovation. To register for the program or read more information about workshops, visit solarizesalem.org or contact Ross Swartzendruber at 503-551-2818 or email.
