Since its beginning, Marion County has played an integral role in Oregon’s history and continues to do so 175 years later.

It was May 2, 1843 when a motley crew of farmers, missionaries, traders and trappers gathered along the Willamette River to determine if a provisional government should be established.

It took two votes with a 52 to 50 majority to start Oregon’s first provisional government. On July 5, 1843, the Organic Act was formally adopted and Oregon Country was divided into four districts, Tuality, Yamhill, Clackamas and Champooick, later changed to Champoeg and finally Marion County in 1849.

While the name has changed three times in its 175-year history, Marion County’s mission has  remained consistent – to serve its citizens.

Commissioner Kevin Cameron shared Marion County is about people and providing them with essential services such as public safety, well-maintained roads, mental and public health and other services.

“Economic development and investments drive our ability to provide these services,” Commissioner Cameron shared. “It provides momentum and opportunities for investment in our communities.”
